Education

This section is meant to provide a basic introduction to horses for all aspiring horsemen and horsewomen.  It is not, however, a substitute for experiential learning!

Some Common Horse Facts

1.Breeding life – 18 years 2 years.

2.Horses have 2 mammary glands.

3.Age of puberty is between 15 – 24 months.

4.Length of estrous cycle is about 21 to 22 days.

5.Normal heart rate is a minimum of 32 – 44 bpm.

6.Best breeding time is during the early spring season.

7.Normal respiratory rate is between 8 – 14bpm minimum.

8.Normal body temperature of adult horses are between             99.5F - 101.5F.

9.   Gestation period is on average 340 days, but may be a             month longer in variation.

10.  Average life span – is between 20 to 30 years depending          on breed, management, environment, and health.
